Discovering a chip or crack in your vehicle windscreen can be worrying. Even a small bump in the road or a spell of cold weather can cause it to spread without warning. However, a chip does not always mean you have to replace the entire windscreen. Often they can simply be repaired which saves you a considerable amount of time and money.
How do I know if my chip can be repaired?
As a rough guide the chip can usually be repaired if it falls under an area that is less than that of a £1 coin. It must also be situated at a distance greater than 5cm away from the edge of the windscreen. If you are unsure then it is best to take your vehicle to a specialist who will be able to advise you straight away if a repair is possible. Aside from the potential risks of ignoring a chip there is also a possibility it could cause your vehicle to fail an MOT, especially if it is located on the drivers side of the windscreen. Not only that but it can be illegal to drive with a crack in your windscreen if it obstructs the drivers vision.
Choosing a windscreen repair specialist
Many car insurance providers offer windscreen cover as standard in their policy. If this is the case then your insurance company will offer a recommended supplier to carry out the repair work for you. This makes the process quick and easy and most windscreen companies will take care of all the paperwork for you. However, it can still pay to shop around when booking your windscreen repair.
Some windscreen companies may recommend a full windscreen replacement compared to other suppliers who may advise the chip can simply be repaired. This is worth bearing in mind considering the fact that a windscreen replacement will still cost a significant amount when you have to pay the excess for your insurance provider.
When choosing a windscreen company ensure that the staff are fully trained to a high level and have at least several years experience of repairing glass. The work should be completed to a BS AU 242A standard and ideally you should look for a company that offers a five year guarantee or more once the repair has been completed. Some windscreen specialists also offer a mobile service for your convenience and have access to a wide range of windscreens, meaning if a replacement is necessary it can be completed quickly and with minimal disruption to your day.
